02) Iceland lays close to the polar circle and close
to Greenland. 03) Country's around the north pole. 04) Iceland is 3 times larger than the Netherlands but
has only 260.000 citizens (The Netherlands has 16.000.000
!).
05) On April 28th 1999 we left Gouda (from the
cheeses). 06) Near river 'lek' past Oudewater. Lovely spring
weather! 07) The Speulder en Sprielder forest in fantastic
spring colours. 08) Backcountry roads in eastern Netherlands
(Overijssel). 09) After 1,220 KM we enter our boat on 22th may 1999
from Hanstholm, Denmark. 10) We spend 3 days on spectaculair Faeröer-islands. 11) Steep mountains, straight from the sea: fabulous! 12) Island Kalsoy 13) Arrival in Seydisfjordur after 6 days.
14) On May 27th 1999 our 14 weeks expedition
starts.... 15) The first days in Iceland, a bit cool, lots of
snow left in June and no tourists 16) Icelandic famous horses
17) The Asbergy-canyon was created by some glacier
dissaster a long time ago
18) Now trees take over the canyon floor, but still
without leaves in early june.
19) The road from Asbergy canyon to Myvatn was still
closed by snow, but we give it a try.
20) We need 3 days for these 60 Kilometers: it's
insane and incredibly pretty at at the time. 21) The Dettifoss waterfall is Europe's most powerful.
We where the first to see it this year.
22) Camp along the north coast anywhere you want. This
photo is at 00:00 hours: still sunny in summer! 23) Next are the West fjords 24) What a great and wild region! 25) It is cold the first day, but the next 10 days it
becomes perfect weather!
26) Just one fjord, we zigzag many fjords (it takes 70
kilometers road to progress 5 kilometers in a straight
line)
27) Isane winds, insane beauty
28) A perfect day. 29) Hollow stones: lava rocks 30) This hollow stone has a good content 31) Next fjord, next fjord, next fjord....... 32) Basalt rocks
33) Mountains out of cake tins 34) Nice roads here 35) More identical cake tin shaped
